buerger katsota architects was founded in 2005 by Stephan Buerger and Demetra Katsota. The practice operates from offices in Athens and Vienna and undertakes architectural and urban design projects of varying scales across Greece and Europe, while actively engaging in academic and editorial research in architecture.

The studio’s work is grounded in a careful reading of the physical context of each project, combined with a sensitive understanding of the culture and climate of place. Projects are developed through an exploration of the experiential qualities of materials, light, detailing, and construction, alongside a strong commitment to the environmental, social, and economic aspects of sustainable architecture.

Recent projects include the Unic Medical Campus at Ellinikon (2025), a mixed-use building on Kifisias Avenue in Athens, GR (2025), the design of 19 private holiday residences at Costa Navarino resort in Messinia, GR (2023) and Radisson Resort Plaza, a 4* hotel renovation project in Skiathos, GR (2022). Upcoming projects include academic and residential developments in Attica as well as several holiday homes across Greece.

Since its founding, buerger katsota architects has received international recognition through numerous awards and distinctions. In 2024, the US-based architecture platform Architizer recognised the practice as one of the 30 Best Architecture Firms in Greece. In the same year, national media platform Archisearch included the studio in its Best Greek Architects & Designers list and selected Apartment Building STD3 as one of the 10 Most Important Housing Projects of 2024.

Notable accolades include the ‘20 Best Architects for Residential Single-Family Award’, the ‘BIGSEE Architecture Award’ for ‘Houses A·2’ (2019), the ‘European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies Van der Rohe Award’ nominations for the ‘Six Thresholds Playground’ and the ‘PXAthens network of prototypical communal spaces for play in Athens (2015) and ‘House A+B’ (2013). The projects ‘House E’  and ‘Patras Student Studios’ are recipients of the ‘Hellenic Institute of Architecture’s Awards’ (2022 and 2013 respectively) and the ‘Union of Greek Architects’ Architecture Abroad Award’ for ‘House S’ (2010). 

The studio’s work has been widely published internationally in leading architecture and design media, including Wallpaper, Bauwelt, The Guardian, Dezeen, ArchDaily, and ΔΟΜΕΣ, among others. It has also been exhibited at institutions such as the Benaki Museum in Athens, the Boston Museum of Science, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Architekturzentrum Wien, and the Venice Architecture Biennale.
